Google Draws Back Curtain on Efficiency of Data Centers

By GREENSTAR | 02/11/2013

Google has created a new Web site highlighting its efforts to improve the energy efficiency of the physical infrastructure of the data center. They have broken it down into five steps:

  1. Measure PUE, or power utilization effectiveness. The site also goes into great detail about how Google calculates its own PUE and the quarterly cumulative PUE for all its data centers going back to 2008.
  2. Manage airflow.
  3. Adjust the thermostat. Google keeps its data centers at 80 degrees F
  4. Use free cooling, whether from outside air, evaporative cooling or a large thermal reservoir.
  5. Optimize power distribution.
